... Agramunt
The village of Agramunt lies at the geographical centre of and is the main town in Ribera de Sió, a natural comarca located at the confluence of the Urgell, La Segarra, and La Noguera comarcas, and bounded by the Montclar and Almenara mountain ranges. It is a nice, pretty place to have a walk and explore the historical secrets that lie all around. The marks of the past consist in different remains from Iberian villages, mosaics, and ancient Roman pottery. Cultural and artistic must-sees include the following: - Church of Santa Maria: 13th century Romanic, with a baroque altarpiece from the 18th century. Declared national monument in 1932.
- Castle of Agramunt: Dates back to 1051.
- Casa de la Vila: Baroque facade from the 18th century. Restored since 2002.
- Market Square: The arcades that line it on all four sides were built in the 19th century.
- Ramparts' Plaza: Here lie the remains of Agramunt's ancient ramparts.
- Espacio Guinovart: Located inside an old building that used to be part of the municipal market. The work of internationally-renowned painter and sculptor Josep Guionovart is on permanent display here.
- Donzell d'Urgell: Medieval village.
- Iron bridge: Metal aqueduct that hoists Urgell's canal across river Sió.
- The Pillar of Almenara: A perfectly restored round tower from the the Muslim period, its upper section is open for visitors to gape at the overwhelming views on the plains of Urgell, on one side, and the pre-Pyrenean mountain range, on the other. A few metres off are the remains of the chapel and part of the ramparts that used to gird the castle of Almenara. The latter consists in the tower itself, some lodgings, the chapel, and the ramparts.
